About Axolotls:

The Axolotl (pronounced AX-oh-lot-ul) is a unique salamander native to the ancient lake system of Mexico City. Axolotls are famous for remaining in their larval form throughout their lives—a phenomenon called neoteny. Unlike other salamanders that lose their gills and move to land, axolotls keep their feathery external gills and stay aquatic forever! They're characterized by their wide heads, lidless eyes, and distinctive 'smile.' Axolotls come in various colors including wild-type (brown/green), leucistic (pink with black eyes), albino (golden), and melanistic (black). These amazing creatures have incredible regenerative abilities—they can regrow entire limbs, parts of their brain, heart, and spinal cord! Scientists study axolotls to understand tissue regeneration. Axolotls are carnivores that eat worms, insects, and small fish. They can grow up to 12 inches long and live 10-15 years. Sadly, axolotls are critically endangered in the wild due to urbanization and water pollution in Mexico City. They're popular pets and important research animals, but wild populations are nearly extinct!
